Domestic Violence refers to violent acts or threats of violence against another person living in the same household (or neighborhood), especially a family member or an intimate partner. Ideally, the home is the last place we would expect criminal activities to take place. Since it is a place inhabited by people closely related either by blood or by mere proximity; it isn’t the most likely place for criminal activity. However, that is not the case. The number of domestic violence cases recorded in Ghana is very alarming. In this write-up, we are looking at the top 5 domestic violence cases in Ghana from 2014 – 2016.

The top 5 domestic violence cases over the three-year period are Assault, Non-maintenance, Defilement, Abduction, and Rape – almost in that order for all the years. It is only in 2014 that there were more rape cases than abduction. Apart from that, the pattern of the cases remains the same throughout all the 3 years, with assault in the lead with the most cases.
